Skinny Jeans is Harmful For Your Health? Not Really
The headlines about skinny jeans causing bad for health has goes viral through media several days ago. A 35-year-old Australian woman was hospitalized for days after her skinny jeans caused her to lose feeling in her legs, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
She had spent hours squatting to empty cupboards for a house move in Australia. When she was walking home that night, her feet were numb and she found it hard to walk, until the point where she fell and couldn’t get up again. She spent hours on the ground before she was found and rushed to the hospital. After four days, she could walk again and was released from the hospital.
Doctors believe the woman developed a condition called compartment syndrome, made worse by her skinny jeans. Doctors were forced to cut the jeans off her calves because they had become so swollen.
“Normally muscles can expand to compensate for swelling, but there was a tourniquet effect, so the muscles had to expand inwards and compressed blood vessels and nerves,” said Dr. Thomas Kimber who treated the patient.
“We blame what happened on a combination of prolonged squatting for hours and the tight jeans she was wearing,”
However, it was the study based on one person only. And the problem is not because she was wearing the skinny jeans, but because she was wearing skinny jeans when she spent hours squatting, as explained by Dr. Thomas Kimber. So obviously it means skinny jeans is not harmful if you know how to use it.
This isn’t a lesson about “do not wearing skinny jeans for your health”; but it’s a lesson for dressing appropriately. Skinny jeans is not made for “fitness” suit, so better not to use it while doing heavy activity. Same like do not wearing winter coat for swimming, if the body is not strong enough to swim with heavy clothes, at the end it will get drowned.
So, there is nothing harmful from skinny jeans, if it used properly. There are million billion women and girls in this world who wear very tight jeans, and there have been for decades. The point is, no need to throw away your skinny jeans, but be smart to wear it when and where it should be.
