Devastating Impact of Cigarette Butt on the Environment
The health impact of cigarettes has been well documented but what gets less coverage is the impact they have on the environment. This infographic from purplebox takes you through what you need to know and the statistics are very worrying. For whatever reason, 65% of cigarette butts are littered. It’s almost like people think that something so small won’t have much of an impact but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The issue is that 80% of the butts on the ground end up in our water systems, maybe not immediately, but eventually the rain will bring them there.
This can have a devastating effect on marine life as when cigarettes are introduced to water they release over 4000 chemicals. There have been some creative efforts to reduce how often people little cigarette butts but there is still a lot of work to do. Find out more in the infographic.
